School supports Rotary Shelterbox appeal

Students from Ramsey Grammar School have presented a cheque for £1,100 to the Rotary Club of Ramsey for the Rotary Shelterbox Appeal. Ramsey Grammar School Head Boy Max Murley and Head Girl Danielle Wilmot presented the cheque to their former Deputy Head Master and Rotary Past President Peter Hooson-Owen and spoke to Rotarians about their roles and the schools charitable fundraising efforts. The money was raised through a non-uniform day and other events organised by students earlier this year and will pay for two complete Shelterboxes to be delivered to disaster areas around the world. ShelterBox is a tough, green plastic box containing a 10-person tent and ancillary equipment, including cooking facilities and utensils, basic tools, water containers and purification tablets, designed to enable a family of up to 10 people survive for at least six months. ShelterBox works directly with local organisations in countries where disasters have occurred, in partnership with other aid agencies and through the international Rotary network. Shelterbox volunteer teams often oversee the distribution of boxes to individual recipients - making sure aid gets direct to those people who need it most. Most recently a ShelterBox Response Team departed for Pakistan to distribute 200 boxes following a 6.4 magnitude earthquake which struck the Ziarat valley in the south-western province of Baluchistan on 29th October. The earthquake caused landslides and reportedly killed more than 200 people. Around 1,500 homes were destroyed and 15,000 people have been displaced. It has been reported that around 50,000 people are sleeping outside in freezing temperatures where, with aftershocks of up to 6.2 on the Richter scale, sleeping indoors is not believed to be safe.
