CLUB NEWS
2011/2012
The Rotary Club of Ramsey, in conjunction
with the Stroke Association, Isle of Man Ambulance Service and Ramsey Group
Practice, have participated in the annual Know Your Blood Pressure Campaign.
The Rotary Club organised a drop in event at Ramsey Town Hall last Saturday
[21 January] and 122 local people took up the opportunity to have a free blood
pressure test with a small number of people receiving advice to make a follow
up visit to their GP. The Stroke Association also had volunteers on hand to
provide information about the Face, Arm and Speech Test (FAST) which helps
people identify the symptoms of stroke, and to provide literature on the impact
of strokes on lives. Rotary Club Community Services Chairman Chris Blatcher
said ‘the Know Your Blood Pressure Campaign is one of Rotary in Britain and
Ireland’s key community projects which is run in conjunction with the Stroke
Association throughout the United Kingdom. The number of people who attended
for testing exceeded our expectation which was particularly pleasing especially
as the IOM Ambulance Service and the Ramsey Group Practice had staff in attendance
to assist the Stroke Association Volunteers with the testing.” High blood
pressure is the biggest risk factor for stroke and that around 40 per cent
of all strokes could be prevented if people with undiagnosed high blood pressure
were identified and treated. High blood pressure can only be diagnosed by
blood pressure testing and can often go undetected. Pictured, PP John under
scrutiny, no pressure outside the Town Hall, PP Kevin contemplates asking

Report on Visit to Old House of Keys, Castletown

On the day Tynwald elected its first ever
Lady President the Club visited Manx National Heritages Old House of Keys
in Castletown. Members sat at the original House of Keys debating table and
had the opportunity to change the course of the islands history by voting
on subjects actually determined by the House of Keys since the 1800’s including
the introduction of a popularly elected government, giving women the vote,
allowing road closures for the road racing, and establishing a low tax regime.
Surprisingly most of the decisions followed the actually decisions made by
the Governments of their times. Afterwards the Club enjoyed refreshments at
the Whitestone at Ballasalla before making the long trek up north. Thanks
to PP Terry for making all the arrangements, the Old House of Keys is definitely
an experience to be recommended. Pictured:- The Old House of Keys, Castletown

PRESS RELEASE
October 2010
The Rotary of Club of Ramsey are hoping to add a splash of
purple colour to the Courthouse Grounds in Ramsey as part of the Rotary International’s
Big Bulb Plant in conjunction with Thanks for Life. The Club will be selling
and planting crocus bulbs as part of a campaign which will see hundreds of
volunteers get local communities involved with planting crocuses and raising
funds to help End Polio Now. The Purple Giant crocuses will not only brighten
up the environment, when they bloom in February it will be at the climax of
Rotary Thanks for Life campaign which seeks to eradicate polio throughout
the world. Since 1985, Rotarians across the whole world have been raising
funds, raising awareness and helping administer the polio vaccine in endemic
countries. Millions of young children have been spared from the curse of this
crippling and potentially fatal disease thanks to the hard work of Rotary
members working alongside Unicef, WHO and other health organisations. Once,
there were 129 endemic countries with 350,000 children being infected every
year. Now, 25 years on, there are only 4 endemic countries and new cases have
declined to around 1,000 per year. The purple colour is symbolic of the dye
used to mark a child's little finger once they have been protected from the
disease. The Club will be at the Courthouse from 10am on Saturday 16th October.
More info below 'Rotary Day - Thanks for Life', a project involving the clubs
and members of Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland (RIBI), to
highlight the humanitarian work of Rotarians with a number one aim of helping
to eradicate polio throughout the world. As well as raising awareness, the
first phase of the project, in the 12 months to April 2010, raised over £1
million, involved thousands of schools around the country and most of the
1,850 Rotary clubs across RIBI. An amazing start! The second phase of the
project aims to build on that success - it will culminate in thousands of
events and activities on and around Rotary Day - February 23rd 2011.
